Markward (Taney) Playground Home Page

The Markward (Taney) Playground in Schuylkill River Park lies at the intersection of Center City Philadelphia, South Philadelphia and West Philadelphia on the banks of the Schuylkill River, where the business and residential districts of Center City overlook the University of Pennsylvania.
The Markward playground (nicknamed Taney by locals) serves thousands of families and visiting families to Philadelphia a year. Numerous daycares, preschools, schools, after-school programs, summer camps and sports leagues bring their children to the playground for recreation time. In addition, visitors to Philadelphia are directed to the playground as it is within walking distance of Philadelphia hotels and shops.
Taney playground has been heavily worn over the past ten years to the point that it is causing injuries to the children that play on it. Thousands of rusted bolts, worn and broken equipment have caused a need for total replacement. The Markward (Taney) Playground Fund run by The Friends of Schuylkill River Park has raised private funds for more than two years to fund the playground’s renovation. We thank Senator Fumo who has obtained $50,000 in state funding for this effort. State Representative Babette Josephs has been most supportive in obtaining $10,000 in state funding for the effort. We were excited to announce at the September 17, 2005 Town Meeting that Councilwoman Anna Verna has committed $100,000 to the capitol budget for the playground. We will continue to fundraise and accept donations as this will go toward better landscaping and playground amenities.
The Playground Fund is working closely with the city of Philadelphia to ensure that the playground meets the needs of the community and is replaced in a timely and efficient manner. We encourage you to explore our site and email us your suggestions, needs, questions or concerns. We greatly appreciate your feedback and believe that the playground’s renovation needs to be a community-based process. We thank our many supporters and volunteers who have given countless hours to our effort, sent emails, and donated funds. Taney playground has been saved! This is truly a victory for the children and families of Philadelphia!
Thank you,
